Canon EOS 350D v Nikon D50 Review

Introduction

Canon 350DNikon D50So, here’s the deal. I’ve bought both the Nikon D50 and Canon EOS 350D and I’m going to put them through their paces and choose the one I want to keep. The other will be sold on Ebay. So this isn’t a review written by a professional journalist with no vested interest in the outcome. It’s written by an amateur photographer who will decide on the camera they intend to use for a few years to come. It also means that it’s the reviewers money being spent and so there’s obviously much more at stake than in your average review.

My Background

As you can see from the About Me section I’ve used a few different cameras in my time. My current main camera is a Canon EOS 300 35mm SLR. It’s given me a few years of good service but the digital bug has bitten after using a couple of digital compact cameras. My main area of interest (as can be seen from the photos on this website) is travel photography. This means I’m looking for a camera which produces the goods when it comes to taking landscape and architectural photos. But really, like any amateur on a tight budget, I’m looking for an all rounder. Of course I may find that I actually prefer to stick with my 35mm camera, so I’ll take comparison shots with all 3 cameras to get a feel for whether serious digital photography is really for me.

Finally, at the moment I’m only really interested in producing good quality JPEG files, so I’ll not be using the RAW modes of either camera. I will bear in mind however that it may be a feature I use more frequently in the future. I’m also not going to use the software supplied with either camera. I use and love Picasa and so I’m going to stick with it and my multi card reader with these two cameras.
